The church of Bougara dates from the French colonial period. French settlers built it to serve the growing European community that lived in the town. Most evidence suggests that the construction took place in the late 19th or early 20th century. At that time, Bougara known then as Rovigo. was a small agricultural centre but played an important role in the region.
