Beni Ali Massacre

The Beni Ali massacre occurred on 26 August 1997 in the mountain village of Beni Ali near the commune of Chrea. On that day, 64 people were killed according to the New York Times and CNN, while Amnesty International estimated around 100 victims. Three days later, the Rais massacre followed, causing even more deaths. Moreover, CNN reported that a girl who survived despite gunshot wounds said the attackers’ leader told his men: ‘Take the most beautiful girls and kill the rest.
