Daira of Bouinan

Created during the 1991 administrative division, the daïra of Bouinan is made up of two communes, Bouinan (34,811 inhabitants) and Chebli (34,887 inhabitants), both covering a total area of 134.55 km². It is bordered to the north by Birtouta (7 km²), to the east by Bougara (8 km²), to the west by Boufarik (9 km²), and to the south by Bougara and Ouled Yaïch.

According to the 2013 population estimate, the daïra had 69,698 inhabitants, with the majority settled in the plain, which represents 70% of the territory, while the remaining 30% is made up of maquis and forested areas. The mountainous zone has been nearly abandoned due to the major exodus of the 1990s.

Thanks to its strategic location near Blida, Boufarik, and Larbaâ, the Bouinan daïra is gradually becoming a key hub for trade in agricultural products, particularly in the production of fruit tree seedlings and ornamental plants. It supplies 50% of the national demand for olive tree seedlings.

The nursery activity was originally dominated by two families from Bouinan—the Fertas and the Zaarouri, known as the “Zitouni”—who specialized in olive seedlings. Since then, this highly profitable activity has expanded to other farmers, who have further developed it in recent years by introducing turf grass cultivation, which has shown promising results.

With more than 90% of its land dedicated to agriculture, Bouinan was also known for producing wooden crates and other packaging used for transporting agricultural products.

Commune of Bouinan

Bouinan is a growing commune located about 25 km east of Blida and 35 km southwest of Algiers. Covering 23 km² the town lies at an altitude of 92 meters. Its position within the Mitidja Plain gives it access to fertile farmland, peaceful countryside, and quick connections to nearby major cities.

Bouinan benefits from improving infrastructure and growing transport options. A new road to Baba Ali provides faster access to Algiers, and future train and tramway projects aim to link Bouinan more efficiently with Blida and the capital. Inside the commune, well-maintained roads and expanding public facilities support comfortable daily living.

Residential and investment opportunities are on the rise, with modern apartment complexes such as AADL housing and a growing number of commercial spaces suitable for cafés, shops, and offices. Local markets, parks, schools, and health centers contribute to a lively and convenient environment, making Bouinan an appealing choice for families, newcomers, and entrepreneurs. More than just a town, Bouinan offers a balance of nature, accessibility, and potential positioning itself as a promising gateway for both peaceful living and smart investment in the Blida region.
