Born in 1942 in Larbaa, Fadéla Boumendjel Chitour grew up in the agricultural Mitidja region. She is the daughter of an FLN lawyer and niece of a national hero.

As a physician, Fadéla Boumendjel Chitour witnessed the poverty of Algerians, which inspired her human rights work. She later co-founded the Wassila Network to support women and children affected by violence.
